Pinhole camera is a type of cameras which captures lights through single aperture without lenses that project an inverted image of subjects. This simple mechanism projects sharper images as small its aperture is, so it requires longer exposure time to receive enough lights. Hence the pinhole camera is often used to capture gradual motions such as stars or clouds.

Although it might be because of tiny vibrations acting upon cameras giving a little blurs to the entire space, the empty air in the space almost looks as if it was frozen same as motions of clouds and waves. Its blueness in the space seems to be dense and heavy as much as it is clear.

“The subject of Fredericks photographs is emptiness, infinity and the void. Scale is lost in these images as the only reference point provided is the razor sharp horizon, consistently placed low in the images to emphasise the vast skies” (Murray Fredericks).

First impression that I was given when I first saw these series was a Japanese term “Kokuu” (虚空).  My interpretation of the term is a void space which accepts and adapts various objects rather than strongly influencing them. I would imagine the site would give strong impact to a visitor which might also even anxieies from its scale and emptiness. However at the same time, its silence seems to allow for his/her existance and he/she starts to accept it…
